Test an XPath expression

Choose XML and enter an XPath expression. Continue in the XML editor to evaluate it, inspect matching nodes and save the displayed results.

Step 1: Choose your XML

Original XML stays in your browser. Task inputs: up to 8 MiB combined.

  1. Step 2: Evaluate in the editor

Your original XML and expression open together in Tools. Choose Evaluate XPath and inspect returned values.

  2. Step 3: Review and keep a copy

Navigate matching nodes or save the displayed query results. Your XML remains unchanged.

Work with the original document

Continue in the shared XML workspace with source and element outline. Back to website keeps it mounted; Resume editor returns to it. Browser sessions are temporary, so download work you want to keep.

Namespaces and bounded results

Use root namespace prefixes, the default alias or explicit Q{namespace-uri} EQNames. Empty results and query errors stay visible; truncated output is labeled.

Frequently asked questions

Which XPath version is supported?

The local engine supports XPath 3.1. Root-declared prefixes are available; use default for the root default namespace or an explicit EQName such as Q{urn:catalog}book. Queries do not change your XML.

What are the query limits?

This entry accepts one XML file up to 8 MiB and an expression up to 4,000 characters. The editor can accept longer expressions. Queries have a 10-second timeout with Cancel. Output is limited to 200 values or one million characters and is labeled when truncated.

Does the XML get sent to a server?

XPath evaluation runs in your browser. No account or AI provider is required. Ordinary page and asset requests reach the hosting provider. Optional AI assistance is separate and requires explicit content selection.
